New Drug Delivery Strategies for Therapeutics and Vaccines Against Emerging Infectious Diseases

The first edition of the SITELF National PhD School, organized by the Division of Pharmaceutical Technology of the Italian Chemical Society (SCI), was held from September 2 to 4, 2024, at the University of Pavia. For 23 years, this school has been a well-established appointment for PhD students in the field of Pharmaceutical Technology, hosted every year at a different Italian university.

The school was a great success both in terms of attendance and quality of scientific presentations. Ninety-seven PhD students from 23 Italian universities and 2 research institutes (IIT and CNR) participated.

The intense and comprehensive three-day scientific program involved 16 speakers. The topics explored new drug delivery strategies related to emerging infectious diseases. In particular:

  • Prof. Marco Terreni (University of Pavia) and Dr. Francesca Micoli (GSK Vaccine Institute for Global Health) discussed the design of polysaccharide-based vaccines.
  • Prof. Claus-Michael Lehr (University of Saarland, Germany) presented models for overcoming microbial barriers.
  • Professors Enrique Aleman Llanso (Polytechnic University of Catalonia, Spain), Maria Iole Carafa (University “La Sapienza” of Rome), Roberta Cavalli (University of Turin), Irem Unalan (University of Erlangen-Nuremberg, Germany), Nicola Tirelli (IIT, Genoa), and Nicolò Mauro (University of Palermo) illustrated various types of drug delivery systems and their application in anti-infective therapies.
  • A session was dedicated to industrial development, featuring talks on emerging production processes by Professors Dimitrios Lamprou (Queen's University Belfast, UK), Paolo Gatti (Evotec, Verona), and Geraldine Piel (University of Liège, Belgium).
  • The excellent lectures on September 4 by Professors Stefano Salmaso (University of Padua), Luigi Calzolai (European Commission, JRC, Ispra), Adriele Prina Mello (Trinity College, Dublin), and Umberto Musazzi (University of Milan) deepened the latest developments of RNA therapy, including regulatory aspects..

Twenty-four presentations by third-year PhD students were selected and discussed in four thematic sessions to encourage active discussion. Fifty-nine posters by first- and second-year PhD students were displayed throughout the school, with dedicated times for presentation and discussion.

A special thanks goes to the sponsoring companies SOTAX, BUCHI, Fedegari Group, and Alfatest, who contributed to the event with technical presentations and exhibition spaces within the school rooms. We also thank the University of Pavia (GLOBEC and INFACT Foundation) for providing the classrooms and historic courtyards. Heartfelt thanks to the entire local organizing staff, composed of young researchers and postdocs from the Department of Drug Sciences at the University of Pavia, and to the SITELF secretariat support through the New Aurameeting agency.

The Academy of Distinction is an innovative educational initiative aimed at nurturing and developing students' talents, especially in STEM fields (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics), through a structured and personalized training program. The Academy stands out for its collaboration with prestigious universities, such as the University of Pavia, and offers students the opportunity to participate in special classes and a wide range of educational activities.

The training pathway includes virtual lessons throughout the school year, followed by an intensive week called "Talent Week," during which students visit the host university to deepen their knowledge in selected subjects. Additionally, the development of "team spirit" is encouraged through group projects and collaborative activities. The program is mainly intended for high school juniors and seniors, providing them with the opportunity to explore advanced topics and work closely with university professors, thereby enriching their education.
